Welcome to the home page of Patricia L. Hale MD, PhD, FACP. Specializing in Internal Medicine, with a special interest in Medical Informatics and Osteoporosis.

MEDICAL INFORMATICS - Dr. Hale has worked and lectured extensively in the area of Medical Informatics for over 10 years. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College. She has also been the chair of Medical Informatics for the American College of Physicians (on both the national and state level) and member of the Patient Safety Steering Committee as well as chair of the Task Force on Electronic Prescribing for HIMSS (Health Information Management Systems Society). She has been an appointed member of the work group on Interoperability for the Certification Commission of Health Information Technology (CCHIT) since it began and previously was also co-chair. She is a juror for certification for both inpatient and ambulatory electronic health records for CCHIT as well. Previously Dr. Hale was the Chief Medical Informatics Officer for Glens Falls Hospital and Chief Technology Officer for Adirondack Medicine, Inc. (a regional IPA)where she led efforts in implementation of a full electronic health record at Glens Falls Hospital, including computerized physician order entry and full loop mediciation management (including bar coded medication administration and electronic medication administration). She also led efforts for formation of a Regional Health Information Network in the Adirondack region of upstate New York, the Adirondack Regional Community Health Information Exchange (ARCHIE).

 

Currently Dr. Hale is the deputy director of the Office of Health Information Technology and Transformation at the New York State Department of Health where she is involved in a number of different types of efforts and initiatives to improve the quality and efficiency of medical care across New York State through the use of medical informatics. Areas of special interest include: Patient Safety, Electronic prescribing, Regional Health Information Networks, Voice and Handwriting Recognition, HIPAA/Security and Confidentiality, and Electronic Health Records. She is co-author of a textbook on Electronic Medical Records published by ACP/ASIM. Research interests in Informatics include functional design for patient centered information systems and interoperability between clinical information systems. 


OSTEOPOROSIS - Dr. Hale is the medical director of the Glens Falls Osteoporosis Center and also for the Adirondack Regional Osteoporosis Coalition (www.adroc.org), a non profit organization dedicated to providing educational resources about osteoporosis in the Adirondack regions of New York and Vermont. She has given lectures on topics ranging from osteoporosis to hormone replacement throughout the northeast.  Research interests in this area include computerized evaluation of osteoporosis risk and she is presently involved in a project to computerize risk assessment for osteoporosis for both high risk and lower risk men and women of all ages.
